Hundreds Attend Abhijeet Dipke-Led ‘Cockroach’ Protest at Jantar Mantar; Police Clear Site After Extension Denied

Hundreds of supporters of the rapidly growing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) gathered at Jantar Mantar in the national capital on Saturday for the outfit’s second major protest, led by founder Abhijeet Dipke. Demonstrators renewed their demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, citing alleged examination irregularities, recruitment issues, and the NEET-UG controversy.

The protest witnessed large participation from students, youth activists, and supporters from different parts of the country. Protesters symbolically banged steel plates and spoons, drawing attention to their demands for accountability and reforms in the education and examination system. Organizers said the demonstration was intended to highlight growing frustration among students over repeated paper leak allegations and concerns regarding transparency in competitive examinations.

Abhijeet Dipke, addressing the gathering, declared that he would not voluntarily leave the protest venue until meaningful action was taken on the group’s demands. However, after authorities reportedly denied an extension for the demonstration, police moved to clear the protest site. Dipke alleged that he was on the verge of being detained and urged supporters—whom the movement calls “cockroaches”—to continue peaceful and democratic protests regardless of police action.

The Cockroach Janta Party, which began as a satirical social media movement before evolving into a nationwide youth campaign, has gained remarkable traction among students and young voters. The movement has focused on issues including unemployment, examination management, recruitment delays, inflation, and government accountability. Its first major protest at Jantar Mantar on June 6 drew widespread national attention and support from various student organizations and civil society groups.

Meanwhile, several social and political groups from Ladakh expressed support for the participation of climate activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk in the CJP-led movement. Representatives of Ladakhi organizations stated that Wangchuk’s appearance at earlier demonstrations helped bring national attention to broader concerns regarding governance, youth aspirations, and democratic participation. They argued that his association with peaceful civic movements could strengthen public engagement on issues affecting Ladakh and other regions.

Political observers note that what began as an online protest campaign has rapidly evolved into a visible youth movement capable of mobilizing large crowds. While critics dismiss the movement as symbolic activism, supporters argue that it reflects genuine frustration among young Indians over employment opportunities, educational challenges, and public accountability. The coming weeks are expected to determine whether the movement sustains its momentum through further protests and organizational expansion.
