What is Gross Income

Gross income is the total amount of money you earn before any taxes, deductions, or other expenses are taken out. It is your earnings at their full amount, not the amount you actually take home.

For an employee, gross income includes your salary or wages before deductions such as:

  • Income tax
  • Social Security or payroll taxes (where applicable)
  • Retirement contributions
  • Health insurance premiums

For example, if your annual salary is ₹12,00,000, your gross income is ₹12,00,000. After taxes and deductions, you might receive only ₹10,20,000 in your bank account. That final amount is often called your net income or take-home pay.

For a business, gross income (sometimes called gross profit) is slightly different. It is calculated by subtracting the cost of goods sold (COGS) from total revenue.

Formula:

Gross Income = Total Revenue − Cost of Goods Sold

For example, if a business sells products worth ₹50,00,000 and spends ₹30,00,000 producing or purchasing those products, its gross income is ₹20,00,000. Operating expenses such as rent, salaries, marketing, and utilities are deducted later to arrive at net profit.

For tax purposes, the meaning can vary slightly depending on the country. In general, gross income includes income from all sources, such as:

  • Salary and wages
  • Business income
  • Rental income
  • Interest and dividends
  • Capital gains (subject to tax rules)
  • Pension or retirement income (where applicable)

In India, for example, the Income Tax Act recognizes gross income from various heads, including salary, house property, business or profession, capital gains, and other sources. After certain deductions and exemptions are applied, the figure becomes the total taxable income.

The easiest way to remember the difference is:

  • Gross income = Money earned before deductions.
  • Net income = Money left after taxes and deductions.

So, if a job advertisement says it pays ₹15 lakh per year, that almost always refers to your gross annual income, not the amount you will actually receive in your bank account.
