Nirmohi Akhara Moves Supreme Court Seeking Reconstitution of Ram Temple Trust
In a significant development linked to the implementation of the Supreme Court’s landmark 2019 Ayodhya verdict, the Nirmohi Akhara has approached the apex court seeking the reconstitution of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which oversees the management of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The application contends that the spirit and intent of the Constitution Bench judgment have not been fully implemented, particularly regarding the Akhara’s role in the temple’s administration.
The petition does not challenge the 2019 Ayodhya judgment that paved the way for the construction of the Ram Temple. Instead, the Akhara argues that while the verdict recognized its historical association with the Ram Janmabhoomi site and envisaged appropriate representation in the Trust, it has not received meaningful participation in the decision-making process. According to the plea, the present structure of the Trust does not adequately reflect the Supreme Court’s observations concerning the Akhara’s traditional role.
Seeking wide-ranging reforms, the Akhara has requested the Supreme Court to direct the Central Government to reconstitute the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust as a public trust rather than allowing it to function in its current form. It has also sought judicial guidelines governing the appointment of trustees, greater transparency in the Trust’s functioning, and institutional oversight by senior seers of the Ramanandi Bairagi Sampradaya. The plea argues that such safeguards are necessary to ensure accountability in the management of one of India’s most prominent religious institutions.
The application comes amid recent public controversy surrounding allegations relating to the handling of donations and valuables offered by devotees at the Ram Temple. Referring to these developments, the Nirmohi Akhara has sought a forensic audit of the Trust’s financial and property transactions, contending that public confidence in the administration of temple assets requires an independent examination. The Akhara has maintained that the request is aimed at ensuring transparency and faithful implementation of the Supreme Court’s earlier directions rather than reopening the Ayodhya title dispute.
The plea also seeks the restoration of certain historical idols installed in 1950 and 1982, arguing that these matters remain unresolved despite the passage of several years since the Supreme Court’s verdict. According to the Akhara, nearly seven years have elapsed, yet several aspects of the judgment’s implementation remain incomplete, necessitating judicial intervention to ensure compliance in both letter and spirit.
The Supreme Court’s landmark judgment delivered on 9 November 2019 awarded the disputed land for the construction of the Ram Temple, directed the Central Government to establish the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, and observed that the Nirmohi Akhara, despite its suit being dismissed as barred by limitation, had a longstanding association with the site and could be given appropriate representation in the Trust if considered necessary by the Government.
The newly filed application is expected to reopen legal scrutiny over the governance framework of the Ram Temple Trust rather than the ownership of the temple itself. If the Supreme Court agrees to hear the matter, it may examine whether the Trust’s present composition and functioning are consistent with the objectives and directions contained in its 2019 Constitution Bench judgment. The proceedings could have important implications for the future governance, transparency, and accountability of the institution responsible for managing one of India’s most significant religious and cultural landmarks.
