Lucknow University Suspends Two Law Students After Supreme Court Courtroom Chaos
Lucknow University has indefinitely suspended two law students, barred them from entering the university campus and expelled them from their hostel following their alleged involvement in a disruption inside the Supreme Court that drew nationwide attention. The disciplinary action came days after the students were arrested by the Delhi Police in connection with the incident.
According to the University’s suspension order, the students have been prohibited from attending classes, participating in academic activities or entering the campus until further orders. They have also been directed to vacate the university hostel immediately and appear before the University Proctor to explain their conduct in the disciplinary proceedings initiated against them.
The controversy stems from an incident inside the Supreme Court of India, where the two students allegedly disrupted courtroom proceedings and made offensive remarks against the Chief Justice of India during an ongoing hearing. The disruption prompted immediate intervention by security personnel, following which the students were taken into custody by the Delhi Police.
University authorities described the alleged conduct as a serious act of indiscipline that had tarnished the institution’s reputation. The administration stated that such behaviour was inconsistent with the standards expected from law students, particularly those studying constitutional law and the justice system. Pending completion of the disciplinary inquiry, the suspension and campus ban will remain in force.
The incident has sparked widespread debate within legal and academic circles over the need to maintain decorum inside constitutional courts. Members of the Bar have emphasised that while criticism of judicial decisions is permissible within constitutional limits, any disruption of court proceedings or use of abusive language against judges strikes at the administration of justice and the dignity of the institution.
The disciplinary proceedings before Lucknow University are separate from the criminal case registered by the Delhi Police. While the university inquiry will determine the students’ academic future, the criminal investigation will examine their alleged conduct inside the Supreme Court and decide whether further legal action is warranted.
