LLB Definition & Meaning

LLB (also written as LL.B.) stands for Legum Baccalaureus, the Latin term for Bachelor of Laws. Despite the abbreviation beginning with a double “L,” it is derived from the plural form of the Latin word lex (law), legum, meaning “of laws.” An LLB is the primary undergraduate degree in law awarded by universities in many countries and serves as the foundational academic qualification for entering the legal profession.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, an LLB is a first degree in law. It is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of legal principles, judicial systems, constitutional governance, statutory interpretation, and the rights and obligations recognized under the law.

In India, the LLB is the essential academic qualification for becoming an advocate. It is offered in two principal formats. The three-year LLB programme is pursued after completing a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, while the five-year integrated law programme combines legal education with another undergraduate degree, leading to qualifications such as BA LLB, BBA LLB, BCom LLB, BSc LLB, or BTech LLB. These programmes are regulated by the Bar Council of India (BCI), which prescribes standards relating to legal education, curriculum, infrastructure, and recognition of law institutions.

The LLB curriculum typically covers a broad range of legal subjects, including Constitutional Law, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Law of Torts, Property Law, Family Law, Administrative Law, Company Law, Labour Law, Environmental Law, Intellectual Property Law, Public International Law, Civil Procedure, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Jurisprudence, and Professional Ethics. Students also undergo practical legal training through moot courts, internships, legal aid clinics, drafting exercises, and research projects to develop advocacy and professional skills.

An LLB degree by itself does not automatically confer the right to practice law in India. After obtaining a recognized LLB degree, a graduate must enroll with the appropriate State Bar Council under the Advocates Act, 1961. Thereafter, subject to the applicable rules and requirements, the graduate becomes an advocate and may be required to satisfy additional conditions prescribed by the Bar Council of India, including those relating to the All India Bar Examination (AIBE), before obtaining full rights to practice.

Beyond litigation, an LLB opens diverse career opportunities in corporate law, judicial services, legal consultancy, arbitration, taxation, compliance, public policy, academia, legal journalism, banking, intellectual property, international organizations, and government service. The degree equips graduates with analytical reasoning, legal research, drafting, negotiation, and problem-solving skills that are valuable across the legal and regulatory landscape.

In essence, an LLB (Bachelor of Laws) is the foundational legal degree that imparts comprehensive knowledge of the law, prepares students for professional legal practice and related careers, and forms the first step toward qualification as an advocate in many jurisdictions, including India.
