A lawyer is a person who is professionally qualified and licensed to advise clients on legal matters, represent them before courts, tribunals, or other authorities, and prepare legal documents. In its broadest sense, a lawyer is anyone trained in the law who provides legal services, although the exact qualifications and rights of practice vary across jurisdictions.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a lawyer is “someone whose job is to give advice to people about the law and speak for them in court.” Similarly, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a lawyer as “one whose profession is to conduct lawsuits for clients or to advise as to legal rights and obligations in other matters.” These definitions emphasize both the advisory and representative roles that lawyers perform within the justice system.
In India, the term “lawyer” is commonly used interchangeably with advocate, legal practitioner, and attorney, although these expressions can have distinct legal meanings. Under the Advocates Act, 1961, an individual who has obtained a law degree, is enrolled with a State Bar Council, and holds a valid certificate of practice issued under the rules of the Bar Council of India is entitled to practice law as an advocate. Advocates represent clients before courts and tribunals, draft legal pleadings, provide legal opinions, negotiate settlements, and uphold the administration of justice.
