Indian Athletes Begin Commonwealth Games 2026 Campaign in Glasgow
India’s athletes have officially begun their campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with a 126-member contingent competing across 10 sports from July 23 to August 2. Led by Olympic champions and emerging young talent, India is aiming to maintain its status as one of the Games’ strongest sporting nations despite the reduced programme for this edition.
The Indian squad is headlined by Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra in javelin, Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu in weightlifting, and world championship medallist Lovlina Borgohain in boxing. Several other medal hopefuls are also in action across athletics, para powerlifting, gymnastics, swimming, para swimming and lawn bowls, with India’s opening days featuring a mix of qualification rounds and medal events.
Competition began with Indian athletes taking to the field in multiple disciplines on the opening day, while Day 2 brings India’s first major medal opportunities. Para powerlifting is expected to be one of the country’s strongest events, while boxing and gymnastics have also attracted significant attention as Indian athletes seek podium finishes.
The streamlined Glasgow Games feature only 10 sports, significantly fewer than previous editions, making every medal opportunity more valuable. Despite the smaller programme, India has fielded a balanced squad of experienced Olympians and promising youngsters, reflecting the country’s growing depth across both Olympic and para sports.
Indian officials remain optimistic about the team’s medal prospects, particularly in athletics, boxing, weightlifting and para events. The highly anticipated men’s javelin competition could see Neeraj Chopra renew his rivalry with Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem, one of the marquee contests of the Games.
