Frozen Shoulder, Musculoskeletal Disorders Emerging as Hidden Complications of Diabetes, Experts Warn
Doctors say persistently high blood sugar is increasingly damaging joints, tendons and nerves, leading to frozen shoulder, trigger finger and other musculoskeletal disorders—even in younger adults.
India’s growing diabetes burden is bringing a lesser-known health concern into focus, with orthopedic specialists reporting a sharp rise in musculoskeletal disorders such as frozen shoulder, trigger finger, tendon injuries and nerve compression syndromes among people living with diabetes. Experts say these conditions are becoming more common in patients in their 40s and 50s, reflecting the increasing prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes at younger ages.
According to specialists, persistently elevated blood glucose damages collagen, tendons, ligaments and nerves through the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). These biochemical changes make connective tissues thicker, stiffer and less elastic, increasing the risk of chronic pain, restricted joint movement and reduced mobility. Over time, poor blood circulation associated with diabetes also slows tissue repair, worsening musculoskeletal complications.
Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, has emerged as one of the most significant orthopedic complications linked to diabetes. Studies indicate that people with diabetes are up to three to four times more likely to develop the condition than the general population, and they often experience more severe symptoms, prolonged recovery and poorer functional outcomes.
Doctors are also seeing an increase in trigger finger, diabetic hand syndrome, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendon disorders and accelerated osteoarthritis among diabetic patients. These conditions can interfere with everyday activities such as writing, lifting objects, dressing and even administering insulin, significantly affecting quality of life.
Medical experts emphasize that musculoskeletal symptoms are frequently overlooked because diabetes management often focuses on blood sugar, heart disease, kidney damage and eye complications. They recommend that patients with persistent shoulder pain, joint stiffness or reduced mobility undergo early orthopedic evaluation, as prompt diagnosis can prevent long-term disability.
Treatment typically includes strict blood sugar control, structured physiotherapy, range-of-motion exercises, anti-inflammatory medications and, when appropriate, corticosteroid injections. Recent clinical research suggests that supervised multimodal physiotherapy plays a vital role in restoring shoulder function, while corticosteroid injections may provide faster short-term pain relief in selected patients.
Healthcare professionals are urging people with diabetes not to ignore persistent joint pain or stiffness. They stress that maintaining optimal glucose control, staying physically active, performing regular flexibility exercises and seeking early medical care can significantly reduce the risk of frozen shoulder and other disabling musculoskeletal complications. As diabetes continues to rise across India, experts believe greater awareness and routine musculoskeletal screening should become an integral part of diabetes care.
