Desk-Bound Employees Increasingly Prone to Frozen Shoulder, Experts Warn

Long hours at computers, poor posture and lack of movement are contributing to a growing number of frozen shoulder cases among office workers, with specialists urging regular stretching and ergonomic work habits.

Orthopedic specialists are reporting an increasing number of desk-bound professionals seeking treatment for frozen shoulder, a painful condition medically known as adhesive capsulitis. Experts say prolonged sitting, limited shoulder movement and poor workstation ergonomics are placing office employees at greater risk of developing stiffness, pain and restricted shoulder mobility, particularly among people working long hours on computers.

According to doctors, remaining in the same seated position for extended periods reduces shoulder joint mobility and places continuous strain on the muscles of the neck, upper back and shoulders. Over time, this lack of movement can contribute to inflammation, tightening of the shoulder capsule and gradual loss of range of motion. While a sedentary lifestyle alone does not directly cause frozen shoulder, it can increase susceptibility, especially in individuals with underlying health conditions.

Medical experts note that the condition is particularly common among adults aged 40 to 65 years and those living with diabetes, thyroid disorders or previous shoulder injuries. These risk factors, combined with prolonged desk work and inadequate physical activity, may accelerate the onset of shoulder stiffness and chronic pain. Research has consistently shown that people with diabetes are three to four times more likely to develop frozen shoulder than the general population.

Early symptoms often include persistent shoulder pain, difficulty reaching overhead, trouble fastening clothing behind the back and discomfort while sleeping on the affected side. Specialists caution that many office workers initially dismiss these symptoms as muscle strain, delaying diagnosis until shoulder movement becomes severely restricted.

Healthcare professionals recommend incorporating movement breaks every 30 to 60 minutes during the workday. Simple stretching exercises, shoulder rolls, posture correction and ergonomic workstation adjustments can help reduce stress on the shoulder joint. Adjustable chairs, properly positioned computer monitors and keyboards, and alternating between sitting and standing are also advised to minimize musculoskeletal strain.

For individuals who develop frozen shoulder, treatment typically includes physiotherapy, home exercise programs, pain-relieving medications and, in selected cases, corticosteroid injections or hydrodilatation. Recent clinical studies indicate that structured physiotherapy remains one of the most effective approaches for restoring shoulder function, while minimally invasive procedures may provide faster pain relief in appropriate patients.

Experts emphasize that frozen shoulder is highly treatable when identified early. They advise office workers not to ignore persistent shoulder pain or stiffness, as timely medical evaluation and rehabilitation can prevent long-term disability and help restore normal shoulder movement. With hybrid and computer-based work becoming the norm, maintaining regular physical activity throughout the workday is increasingly viewed as an essential part of musculoskeletal health.
