Day After Lucknow Fire, Khan Sir’s Institute Sealed in Prayagraj Over Safety and Land-Use Violations
A day after the devastating fire at a coaching complex in Lucknow’s Aliganj area claimed 15 lives, authorities in Prayagraj sealed Khan Global Classes, a coaching institute associated with educator Faizal Khan (Khan Sir), during a statewide crackdown on coaching centres and educational establishments. The action has intensified scrutiny of fire safety and regulatory compliance across Uttar Pradesh.
Why Was the Institute Sealed?
According to officials of the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA), the Civil Lines coaching centre was found operating without the required approval for its land-use category. While the building had permission for commercial activities, coaching institutes fall under the category of community service facilities and require separate approval. Authorities also cited concerns regarding compliance checks being carried out after the Lucknow tragedy.
During the operation, students were asked to vacate the premises before the institute was sealed. Officials warned that any attempt to break the seal or resume operations without authorization could lead to criminal proceedings, including registration of an FIR.
Statewide Crackdown After Lucknow Tragedy
The sealing comes in the aftermath of a massive fire that erupted in a coaching and gaming complex in Lucknow’s Aliganj area on June 22, killing at least 15 people, most of them young students and visitors. The incident triggered outrage and raised serious questions about fire safety standards in educational institutions.
Following the tragedy, the Uttar Pradesh government ordered inspections of coaching centres, hotels, and commercial establishments across multiple districts. Officials report that dozens of institutions have already been sealed for violations related to fire safety norms, emergency exits, occupancy permissions, and regulatory approvals.
Disturbing Findings in Prayagraj
Inspections in Prayagraj revealed widespread non-compliance. Out of 93 coaching institutes examined, only 16 reportedly possessed valid fire No Objection Certificates (NOCs). Authorities sealed multiple institutes and indicated that further action may follow against establishments failing to meet mandatory safety requirements.
Growing Safety Concerns Around Coaching Hubs
The latest action reflects a broader national concern regarding the rapid growth of coaching centres in densely populated urban areas, often operating in buildings not originally designed for educational use. Experts have repeatedly warned about inadequate fire exits, overcrowding, insufficient emergency response systems, and lack of regulatory oversight. Similar inspections and closures have now been reported in cities including Kanpur, Noida, Jaipur, and Varanasi.
What Happens Next?
Authorities have indicated that inspections will continue across Uttar Pradesh. Coaching centres found operating without valid fire NOCs, emergency infrastructure, or appropriate land-use permissions may face sealing, penalties, or prosecution. The crackdown is expected to impact hundreds of institutes and could lead to stricter regulatory norms for the coaching industry in the coming months.
The sealing of Khan Global Classes in Prayagraj has become one of the most high-profile actions in Uttar Pradesh’s post-Lucknow-fire enforcement drive, highlighting the state’s renewed focus on fire safety, building compliance, and student protection.
