PM Modi Launches ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva Abhiyan’, Says Drug-Free Youth Vital for Building Viksit Bharat
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the nationwide ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, a 100-week campaign aimed at eliminating substance abuse among young people and transforming the fight against drugs into a nationwide people’s movement. Addressing the launch through video conferencing, the Prime Minister said a physically fit, mentally strong and drug-free youth population is essential to achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
The campaign witnessed participation from over one crore young people connected through thousands of locations across the country, where they collectively took the ‘Nasha Mukti Pledge’. Unlike conventional awareness drives, the initiative has been designed as a sustained 100-week public participation programme, with anti-drug activities scheduled every Sunday to encourage youth-led action, community engagement and healthy lifestyles.
During his address, the Prime Minister warned that substance abuse destroys careers, families and society. He remarked that while drugs may provide a temporary “high”, they ultimately push an individual’s entire life into decline. Calling India’s youth the nation’s greatest strength, he urged them to reject addiction and become ambassadors of a healthier, drug-free India.
PM Modi also stressed that the fight against drugs cannot be won by the government alone. He appealed to parents, teachers, educational institutions and civil society to work together in identifying and preventing addiction among young people. Families, he said, should seek medical and professional help instead of hiding addiction due to social stigma, adding that rehabilitation and timely intervention can help individuals rebuild their lives.
Highlighting the broader national security dimension, the Prime Minister alleged that hostile nations use drug trafficking as part of their strategy to weaken India’s younger generation. He said narcotics not only threaten public health but can also undermine the country’s future by targeting its youth, making the campaign an important mission for both social welfare and national development.
The Prime Minister also encouraged universities and colleges to integrate anti-drug awareness into campus activities and urged professors to lead discussions on the dangers of substance abuse. He said educational institutions can play a decisive role in protecting young minds and promoting responsible lifestyles.
The ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ forms part of the government’s broader vision of building a healthy, confident and empowered generation capable of driving India’s economic and social transformation by 2047. Officials said the campaign will rely on continuous public participation, youth volunteers and community-based activities to create long-term awareness against drug abuse across urban and rural India.
