The 73rd Amendment to the Indian Constitution gave constitutional status to the Panchayati Raj institutions. This amendment added Part IX titled “The Panchayats” (Articles 243 to 243O) and the Eleventh Schedule, which lists 29 functional items under the Panchayats’ jurisdiction. The amendment mandates the establishment of a three-tier Panchayati Raj system at the village, intermediate, and district levels, and ensures regular elections, reservation for SCs/STs, and a uniform structure across states. It came into force on April 24, 1993, which is now observed as National Panchayati Raj Day.
