The first Chief Justice of India was Justice H. J. Kania (Harilal Jekisundas Kania).

The first Chief Justice of India was Sir Harilal Jekisundas Kania. He assumed office on 26 January 1950, the day India became a republic and the Supreme Court of India was established. He served as Chief Justice until his death on 6 November 1951. Before becoming the first Chief Justice of independent India, he was the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of India and had a distinguished judicial career, including as a judge at the Bombay High Court. He also administered the oath of office to the first President of India, Rajendra Prasad.​
