Why Intelligent People Believe the Big Lie: The Psychology of Confirmation Bias
One of the greatest misconceptions about misinformation is the belief that only uninformed or poorly educated people fall victim to it. Decades of psychological research tell a very different story. Intelligence, education, and professional success do not make people immune to falsehoods. In many cases, highly intelligent individuals are just as susceptible to believing misleading narratives as anyone else, although the reasons may differ. Rather than lacking information, intelligent people often possess greater ability to defend existing beliefs, selectively interpret evidence, and construct sophisticated justifications for conclusions they have already reached. The Big Lie succeeds not because it deceives only the uninformed, but because it exploits universal features of human cognition that affect nearly everyone. Modern psychology identifies confirmation bias as one of the most influential mechanisms behind this phenomenon.
Confirmation bias refers to the natural tendency to search for, notice, remember, and interpret information in ways that support existing beliefs while giving less attention to information that challenges them. This bias is not a sign of irrationality or low intelligence. Instead, it reflects the brain’s preference for cognitive efficiency. Evaluating every claim objectively requires considerable mental effort. Accepting information that fits existing beliefs is psychologically easier than carefully reconsidering deeply held assumptions.
The human brain evolved to make rapid decisions in environments where complete information was rarely available. As a result, people rely on cognitive shortcuts, or heuristics, to process enormous amounts of information efficiently. These shortcuts are usually beneficial because they allow quick decision-making. However, they also create vulnerabilities that organized misinformation campaigns can deliberately exploit. Confirmation bias becomes especially powerful when individuals face emotionally significant topics involving politics, religion, public health, national identity, or personal values.
One reason intelligent people are particularly vulnerable is that intelligence often improves reasoning ability without necessarily improving objectivity. Highly educated individuals frequently become better at defending positions they already hold rather than evaluating competing evidence impartially. Psychologists sometimes describe this as motivated reasoning—the tendency to use reasoning skills to justify preferred conclusions instead of discovering the most accurate ones. Rather than asking, “Is this true?” the unconscious question often becomes, “Can I defend what I already believe?”
This explains why presenting additional facts does not always change people’s minds. In some circumstances, new evidence simply provides more material for selective interpretation. Individuals may scrutinize contradictory evidence more critically while accepting supportive information with relatively little examination. The same intelligence that enables careful scientific analysis in one context can become an effective tool for rationalizing existing beliefs in another.
Social identity strengthens confirmation bias even further. Human beings rarely form beliefs in complete isolation. Political affiliation, professional communities, religious organizations, cultural traditions, friendship networks, and online groups all contribute to personal identity. Accepting information consistent with one’s group often strengthens social belonging, while rejecting group beliefs may threaten relationships or personal identity. Consequently, confirmation bias serves not only intellectual functions but also important social and emotional needs.
Digital technology has significantly intensified these psychological tendencies. Social media algorithms personalize content according to previous behavior, presenting users with articles, videos, and discussions similar to material they have already engaged with. Over time, repeated exposure to compatible viewpoints creates increasingly homogeneous information environments. Individuals may sincerely believe they have independently confirmed a claim when, in reality, they have encountered numerous variations of the same underlying narrative from interconnected sources.
Confirmation bias works especially well when combined with repetition. Cognitive psychologists describe the “illusory truth effect,” in which repeated statements become increasingly believable simply because they feel familiar. A comprehensive meta-analysis covering 182 studies and more than 31,000 participants confirmed that repeated exposure consistently increases perceived truthfulness across a wide range of situations. Even when individuals possess relevant background knowledge, familiarity can temporarily outweigh factual memory during rapid judgments.
Remarkably, repetition influences not only belief but also behavior. Experimental studies have shown that repeated misinformation becomes more likely to be shared with others on social media, extending its reach beyond the original audience. Thus, confirmation bias and repetition create a reinforcing cycle: familiar information appears more credible, credible information is shared more frequently, and repeated sharing makes it even more familiar.
Emotions play a central role throughout this process. Fear, anger, pride, hope, resentment, and moral outrage all reduce analytical thinking while increasing reliance upon intuitive judgments. Emotionally charged narratives are therefore especially resistant to correction because they become intertwined with personal experiences rather than existing merely as abstract factual claims. A Big Lie rarely succeeds through logic alone; it succeeds because it provides emotionally satisfying explanations for complex events.
Confidence presents another paradox. People often assume that greater confidence indicates greater accuracy. Psychological research repeatedly demonstrates that confidence and correctness are not always closely related. Individuals may become extremely confident in inaccurate beliefs when they repeatedly encounter supportive information while rarely confronting credible contradictory evidence. Strong confidence can therefore reinforce confirmation bias instead of protecting against it.
The internet has made supporting evidence available for almost any position imaginable. Search engines, online communities, videos, podcasts, blogs, and social media allow individuals to locate information consistent with virtually any prior belief. Confirmation bias therefore becomes easier to satisfy than at any previous point in human history. Instead of evaluating diverse perspectives, users may unconsciously construct highly personalized information environments that continuously reinforce existing assumptions.
Importantly, confirmation bias does not imply that every strongly held belief is false. Many beliefs supported by confirmation bias are also factually correct. The psychological mechanism concerns how evidence is processed rather than whether the conclusion ultimately proves accurate. Critical thinking therefore requires evaluating evidence consistently regardless of whether it supports or contradicts one’s preferred position.
Research offers encouraging evidence that confirmation bias can be reduced, although it cannot be eliminated entirely. Studies indicate that encouraging people to focus on accuracy before evaluating information significantly weakens the influence of repetition and misinformation. Simply asking individuals to consider whether a statement is true before sharing or discussing it improves discernment. Awareness of the illusory truth effect itself also reduces susceptibility because people become more likely to distinguish familiarity from evidence. Recent experiments likewise suggest that explicit warnings before exposure to repeated claims can reduce the persuasive impact of repetition.
Practical habits further strengthen resistance. Seeking high-quality sources that challenge one’s assumptions, separating factual questions from identity, examining original evidence instead of summaries, slowing down emotionally charged judgments, and remaining willing to revise conclusions when credible evidence changes all reduce the influence of confirmation bias. Scientific thinking is valuable precisely because it institutionalizes these habits through peer review, replication, transparency, and continuous testing rather than relying upon individual confidence alone.
The psychology of confirmation bias reveals a profoundly important lesson: intelligence is not the opposite of misinformation. The true opposite is intellectual humility. The Big Lie does not flourish because intelligent people stop thinking; it flourishes because human reasoning is often recruited to defend identity, preserve certainty, and reduce cognitive discomfort rather than impartially evaluate reality. Recognizing this universal vulnerability is not a sign of weakness but of wisdom. The strongest defense against organized deception is not assuming that one is too intelligent to be misled. It is accepting that every mind—including the most educated, experienced, and analytical—is capable of mistaking familiarity, confidence, and emotional certainty for objective truth, and consciously choosing evidence over instinct whenever the two come into conflict.
