Delhi Court Sentences Former AAP Councillor Tahir Hussain, Four Others to Life Imprisonment in IB Officer Ankit Sharma Murder Case
In a major development in one of the most high-profile cases arising from the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots, a Delhi court has sentenced former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and four co-convicts to life imprisonment for the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma. The sentencing follows their conviction earlier this month after the court found them guilty of participating in a violent mob that attacked and killed Sharma during the communal violence in February 2020.
The prosecution had sought the death penalty, arguing that the killing was exceptionally brutal and qualified as a “rarest of rare” case. According to the prosecution, Sharma sustained 51 external injuries, including multiple fatal wounds, before his body was dumped in a nearby drain. However, the court concluded that while the crime was heinous, the prosecution had not established that the convicts were beyond the possibility of reform, making life imprisonment the appropriate sentence.
Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh had earlier convicted Tahir Hussain and the four other accused on charges including murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, promoting enmity, and criminal conspiracy. The judgment held that Hussain was a member of an armed mob involved in orchestrating violence in the Chand Bagh area during the riots, where Ankit Sharma was allegedly dragged, assaulted, and killed.
The murder of Ankit Sharma became one of the most prominent criminal cases linked to the 2020 Delhi riots, which claimed more than 50 lives and left hundreds injured. The court observed during the trial that the evidence, including eyewitness testimony, forensic material, and other corroborative evidence, established the involvement of the convicted persons beyond reasonable doubt.
Following the sentencing, Tahir Hussain stated that he would challenge both his conviction and the life sentence before the Delhi High Court, maintaining that he had been wrongly implicated in the case. The appeal is expected to reopen legal scrutiny of the trial court’s findings in the coming months.
The verdict has also triggered political reactions. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta welcomed the judgment, describing it as a step towards justice for the victim’s family, while also criticising the Aam Aadmi Party over its past association with Hussain. The ruling has once again brought the 2020 Delhi riots and the accountability of those accused of orchestrating the violence into the national spotlight.
Legal experts believe the judgment is one of the most significant convictions arising out of the Northeast Delhi riots. While the sentence of life imprisonment concludes the trial at the sessions court level, the matter is likely to continue through the appellate process, where the Delhi High Court will examine both the conviction and the quantum of punishment if appeals are filed.
