Justice Sindhu Sharma Inspects Newly Constructed District Court Complex at Melongthang, Leh to Review Judicial Infrastructure
Hon’ble Justice Sindhu Sharma, Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and Executive Chairman of the Ladakh Legal Services Authority (LLSA), visited the newly constructed District Court Complex at Melongthang in Leh to review the readiness of the judicial infrastructure and assess facilities aimed at strengthening the justice delivery system in the Union Territory. The visit formed part of the judiciary’s continued efforts to modernise court infrastructure and improve access to justice in the remote Himalayan region.
During the inspection, Justice Sharma reviewed the newly established courtrooms, administrative offices, judicial chambers, record management facilities and other essential infrastructure within the complex. She also interacted with judicial officers and officials involved in the functioning of the new court premises, emphasising the importance of efficient infrastructure in ensuring timely and effective judicial administration.
As Executive Chairman of the Ladakh Legal Services Authority, Justice Sharma also examined the facilities created for legal aid and public outreach. She stressed that modern court infrastructure should be complemented by robust legal services so that economically weaker sections and residents of remote areas receive meaningful access to justice. The visit highlighted the role of the Legal Services Authority in promoting legal awareness, mediation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms across Ladakh.
The District Court Complex at Melongthang represents a major investment in Ladakh’s judicial infrastructure. Constructed at an estimated cost of about ₹54.85 crore, the complex houses modern courtrooms, administrative offices and supporting facilities designed to improve judicial efficiency. The adjoining Ladakh Legal Services Authority building has also been developed to expand legal aid services and public access to justice in the Union Territory.
The inspection follows the formal inauguration of the District Court Complex and the Ladakh Legal Services Authority building by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant in the presence of the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, Justice Arun Palli, Justice Sindhu Sharma and other senior judicial and civil authorities. The inauguration marked a significant milestone in the strengthening of judicial infrastructure in one of India’s most geographically challenging regions.
Justice Sharma observed that the new complex is expected to substantially improve court administration, provide a better working environment for judicial officers and lawyers, and enhance litigants’ access to efficient judicial services. She reiterated the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring that residents of Ladakh benefit from modern, accessible and citizen-centric justice institutions, in line with the broader objective of strengthening the rule of law across the Union Territory.
