Order in the Digital Court: Judiciary Pushes Ahead With Technology-Driven Justice Delivery
India’s judiciary is continuing its transition towards a technology-enabled justice system, with digital courts and e-Courts infrastructure becoming an integral part of case management, filing, and judicial administration. The broader push aims to reduce delays, improve transparency, and make court services more accessible for litigants and lawyers across the country.
The digital transformation encompasses a range of services, including electronic filing of cases, virtual hearings, online payment of court fees, digital service of summons, AI-assisted judgment search, and real-time access to case status through the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG). These initiatives are intended to reduce dependence on physical paperwork while improving efficiency in court functioning.
Judicial authorities have increasingly emphasized that technology is designed to assist—not replace—judicial decision-making. While artificial intelligence and digital tools can help judges and court staff organize records, conduct legal research, and streamline administrative processes, the responsibility for adjudication continues to rest solely with the judiciary.
The e-Courts project has also expanded facilities such as Virtual Courts for specified categories of cases, online access to certified copies, electronic payment systems, and e-Sewa Kendras that assist litigants lacking digital access. These measures are aimed at making justice delivery faster while ensuring that citizens from diverse backgrounds can access court services.
Legal experts note that digital courts are likely to play an increasingly significant role as litigation volumes continue to rise. However, they also stress the importance of strengthening cybersecurity, protecting sensitive judicial data, ensuring reliable digital infrastructure, and bridging the digital divide so that technological advancements do not become barriers to access to justice.
The judiciary’s continuing investment in digital infrastructure reflects a broader shift toward paperless and technology-enabled courts. As digital systems mature, they are expected to improve case management, enhance transparency, and support faster disposal of matters while preserving the fundamental principles of fairness, judicial independence, and due process.
