Investigators documented lapses in sterilization, inadequate environmental cleaning, improper use of personal protective equipment and poor hand hygiene, increasing the risk of difficult-to-treat infections, including those caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM).
Experts note that cosmetic surgery carries risks even when performed by qualified surgeons. Common complications include excessive bleeding, wound infections, nerve injury, blood clots, scarring, anesthesia-related problems and delayed healing. Individuals with diabetes, obesity or those who smoke may face a higher likelihood of postoperative complications.
The growing trend of medical tourism has intensified these concerns. Many patients travel overseas seeking lower costs or faster access to procedures, but differences in healthcare standards, regulatory oversight and follow-up care can increase the chances of complications. When problems develop after returning home, diagnosis and treatment may be delayed, making infections more difficult to control.
Doctors also emphasize that cosmetic surgery should not be viewed as a quick solution to body image concerns. Medical experts have reported increasing demand driven by social media filters and unrealistic beauty standards, prompting calls for better patient counseling and psychological assessment before elective procedures.
Health authorities recommend that anyone considering cosmetic surgery verify the credentials of the surgeon and facility, understand the potential risks and expected recovery period, and ensure that appropriate postoperative care is available. Patients should also discuss their medical history in detail before surgery and seek immediate medical attention if they experience persistent pain, fever, swelling or unusual wound discharge after the procedure.
As cosmetic procedures become increasingly accessible across the globe, regulators and public health agencies are urging greater awareness, stronger safety standards and improved surveillance to reduce preventable complications.
