Supreme Court to Hear DMK Plea Against Tamil Nadu CM Vijay’s Planned Meeting with Karur Stampede Victims’ Families
Opposition alleges proposed interaction could influence witnesses in the court-monitored CBI probe; Supreme Court agrees to hear the matter on Tuesday.
The Supreme Court is set to hear on Tuesday an urgent application filed by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) seeking directions to restrain Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and certain ministers from interacting with families of the victims of the Karur stampede while the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe remains underway. The application was mentioned before a bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Sheel Nagu, which agreed to list the matter for hearing.
The DMK, through its Organising Secretary R.S. Bharathi, has argued that the families of those killed and injured are material witnesses in the court-monitored CBI investigation. According to the plea, any direct interaction between senior political leaders and these witnesses during the investigation could create a reasonable apprehension of witness influence and undermine the integrity of the ongoing probe.
Senior Advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the petitioner, informed the Supreme Court that Chief Minister Vijay is scheduled to visit Karur on July 10 to distribute government orders, compassionate appointments, financial assistance and other welfare benefits to the affected families. While clarifying that the petition does not oppose the extension of government assistance, the DMK contends that such interactions should take place only under safeguards approved by the Court.
The application also seeks to restrain Chief Minister Vijay, Minister Aadhav Arjuna, C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar and other accused persons from making public statements or attributing criminal liability while the investigation is pending. The plea alleges that recent political remarks by some ministers could prejudice the investigation and influence witnesses connected with the case.
During the mentioning of the matter, Justice Amanullah initially questioned what specific relief the Court could grant in such circumstances. After hearing the submissions on the urgency of the matter, the bench agreed to hear the application on the following day, considering the proposed visit scheduled later this week.
The Karur stampede, which occurred during a major political gathering in September 2025, claimed the lives of 41 people and left dozens injured. The tragedy triggered nationwide concern over crowd management at political events and later resulted in a Supreme Court-monitored CBI investigation to determine accountability and possible criminal negligence.
The case has acquired significant political importance following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, after several individuals named in the investigation became ministers in the Vijay-led state government. The DMK argues that this development necessitates greater judicial oversight to ensure the independence and fairness of the ongoing investigation.
Legal experts note that the Supreme Court’s hearing is unlikely to determine the merits of the criminal case itself. Instead, the Court will examine whether interim safeguards are necessary to protect witnesses and preserve the credibility of the court-monitored investigation while allowing the government to continue providing welfare assistance to the victims’ families.
The outcome of Tuesday’s hearing could shape the future conduct of public officials in cases involving ongoing criminal investigations, particularly where interactions with victims or witnesses coincide with political or administrative engagements. The Supreme Court’s decision will therefore be closely watched not only in Tamil Nadu but also in broader discussions on witness protection, judicial oversight and accountability in politically sensitive cases.
